Cheb - Cheb has proposals on how the reconstruction of the Dominican monastery in the city center could look like, turning it into the headquarters of a basic art school. Participants of the architectural competition announced by the Society of Peter Parler provided their vision to the city. However, when the expensive reconstruction will take place depends on the possibilities of the city treasury, said Deputy Mayor Pavel Hojda (KSČM) to ČTK today. The competition assignment included not only the actual use of the monastery, which served as a cultural center just a few years ago, but also modifications to its surroundings, especially Jánské náměstí and the streets Kamenná and Dominikánská. According to Hojda, the proposals brought a number of suggestions, both for inside the monastery and, for example, for opening the complex towards Jánské náměstí. "Currently, the monastery has no use; the only thing we thought of is relocating the basic art school. Otherwise, even if we were to do basic maintenance, the Baroque monument will gradually decay," Hojda stated. However, the costs amounting to several hundred million crowns for the reconstruction will be difficult for the city to find. According to Hojda, reconstruction is thus a prospect for the coming years. The Dominican monastery is one of three in the city. The Franciscan monastery, which the city is gradually repairing but is currently only used marginally, is owned by the city, as is the Dominican monastery on Kamenná Street. Until the completion of the Svoboda Cultural Center, the monastery was the venue for concerts and social events. It is now largely unused. The jury selected the winning proposal from Atelier Brandštetr, which will receive a reward of 300,000 crowns. The two other awarded proposals will receive 150,000 and 100,000 crowns, respectively. People can view them starting Thursday at an exhibition in the vestibule of the Cheb train station.
