On the occasion of the Critical Infrastructure exhibition, there will be a presentation and debate with Polish artist Tytus Szabelski-Róźniak.
Tytus Szabelski-Róźniak presented photographs of the Druzhba oil pipeline at the Critical Infrastructure exhibition. He previously addressed the topic in his series Divide and Connect, where he examines the pipeline as a tool for building trade relations as well as for conducting conflict. The topic of the pipeline became particularly urgent after February 2022, when Russia launched a further phase of military aggression against Ukraine, making the name Druzhba (Friendship) sound sadly ironic in this context. The photographs show a section of the pipeline that runs from Siberia to refineries in Polish Płock and German Schwedt. The construction emerges above the ground at the point where it crosses the Narew River, between the Zegrzyński water reservoir and the town of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki. The accompanying soundtrack is a recording of the local soundscape. The sounds of nature are mixed with the roar of Blackhawk military helicopters and airplanes, as well as the sound of the pipeline itself, which has become a subject for the composer Hubert Karmiński.
Tytus Szabelski-Róźniak (1991) is a photographer and visual artist. He studied journalism and social communication at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and photography at the University of the Arts in Poznań. He is a finalist of Polish and international competitions for the best master's thesis in the field of art (Gdańsk, 2016; Prague, 2017) and a holder of the Konrad Pustoła scholarship for socially engaged photography (2017), a participant in the Visegrad Fund Sound and Visual Ars residency (Trafó Gallery, Budapest, 2021), and the Biennale Warszawa residency (2020).
