Guest facilities U Prutu by the city dam
At the "Jablonec Sea", the current situation without proper facilities became unbearable and the town decided to launch a competition for facilities for three different locations in 2020. 'U Prutu' (= by the fishing rod) is clearly the most urban one, due to the nearby housing estate, the playground, the promenade, the cycle path and the beach. This facility is the first one built of the proposed. The kiosk floats in the new clay area, making use of the multiple directions of access and the existing trees that have thus become part of the whole. It will be the only one of the proposed facilities to operate all year round. The facility is divided by thirds into a kiosk, covered seating and a public toilet.
Like the other proposed buildings, it draws on common ground:
- all buildings are linear, longitudinally oriented, adjacent to existing roads
- they face the water surface, which is the defining element of the whole
- they have a understandable wooden structure with a covered porch
- they create a counterpoint to the grown-up trees by their horizontal mass.
As a whole, the kiosk can be completely closed by a folding door, which is located on the outer line of the porch. This covered corridor not only links the internal functions into one whole, but unifies all the proposed buildings around the dam. The spacing between the façade planks visually separates the folding door from the rest of the façades, the inner spaces are permanently ventilated even when closed, and light passes through in and out during the day. The closable envelope clearly defines day/night or open/closed. Polarity is emphasised by the contrasting interior/exterior colours and the clear front / rear. The black paint sets itself neutrally to the coloured facades of the block of flats behind and reinforces the duality.
If a new facility is needed around the dam, it should be conceptually identical to those already proposed. The layout can be adapted to the site and needs. Similarly designed objects would support the natural diversity of the different corners of the dam.
