Two Instead of OneThe apartment in Vršovice turned out to house twins. The floor plan of 40 m² was divided by architects into two nooks that resemble each other. The interior of each unfolds from the texture of the original plaster. "The Blue One" is overall darker, playing with black accessories and smoked glass. Its twin, "The Yellow One," on the other hand, combines softer and lighter shades with translucent glazing.
Splitting the Whole Reflected in DetailGlass partitions between the kitchen and bathroom in both spaces allow light to penetrate into the heart of the floor plan. Here, the kitchen cabinetry connects to the bathroom furniture, creating an optical illusion through the reflection of the sink, faucet, and cabinets. However, this is a conceptual split referencing the division of the whole.
Original Paintings as ArtworkIn the middle of the layout, the old scraped paintwork has been preserved. Tiny cracks lend authenticity to the walls, completing the space as a work of art. Only linear marks from the electrician for switch fittings, notes from workers, and the so-called "waagrys," a horizontal line at a height of 1 meter facilitating the precise installation of all layers of the renovation, have been added to the paintings.
Utilization of Ceiling HeightBuilt-in levels made of steel rods increase usable space. The railing is woven with stainless steel cables, with each room featuring a different decor referencing the Art Nouveau railings of apartment buildings. The sleeping nook was plastered without paint, the smoothing of the plaster by craftsmen shows through a translucent matte lacquer.
Details and AccessoriesThe space is adorned with original stuccos, reveal windows, oak parquet flooring, and cleaned panel doors cut above the 3rd hinge to fit under the sleeping level. The main lighting is provided by a vertical bundle of fluorescent lights reminiscent of a lantern. Welds, scratches, and visible brush strokes are welcome throughout the apartment.
