The cultural space Viola is located in close proximity to the historic core of Prešov, in the ground floor of a multifunctional building from the 1990s. In the first phase in 2016, we adapted the former pizzeria into a literary café, and subsequently in 2018, the spaces of the former FAX COPY operation were reconstructed into a multifunctional hall serving for theatrical performances and concerts. The center for arts is managed by a civic association focused on working with schoolchildren, cultural and educational events as well as exhibitions. Each space has a separate entrance from Tkáčska Street, providing them with a certain autonomy, while both spaces synergize with each other. The literary café is spatially defined by three elements: a bar box, a library, and a stage, all executed in natural plywood. The wooden bleached wall cladding communicates with a wooden bleached slatted ceiling that ensures acoustic quality. The floor is a combination of high-quality durable carpet and polished concrete. The lighting combines suspended fixtures with elementary bulbs and LED strips.
The exterior generating a new terrace consists of a combination of a vertical wooden lattice made of thermowood and cladding made of cement-bonded particle boards. In the second phase, the realized hall features a newly created elevation with fixed seating organized in seven rows. The practically monochromatic design of the interior arose from the realization that the space is merely a backdrop for the “colorful” production. The walls are treated with black-stained wooden cladding with a vertical structure, ensuring the acoustic quality of the space. The minimal entrance area with a cloakroom opens generously with a window onto Jarková Street. The floors are a combination of durable carpets and polished concrete. The block of sanitary facilities is designed monochromatically in a contrasting yellow color. The exterior continues the first phase and its materiality redefines the ground floor of the multifunctional building.
