Context
The current area of Masaryk Hospital was established in the 1930s. In 1926, the city decided to construct a new modern hospital, and gradually the pavilions G, B were built; pavilion A was opened in 1930, and pavilion B in 1937, followed later by pavilions C and D.
The urban concept of the campus is based on the fundamental geometry of Masaryk Hospital from the 1930s, particularly the reconstructed pavilion B (Faculty of Applied Arts and Design) and pavilion A (future Faculty of Science).
The urban framework of both dominant buildings in the area, pavilions A and B, is defined from the north and south by the central area of both new buildings – the university library (UK) and the Multifunctional Information and Educational Center (MFC), which will include educational, conference, and administrative facilities of the campus.

Urbanism/Architecture

University Library
The concept of a low-lying prism of open shelves is placed above a compact block of administrative and service functions and a three-story building of the Faculty of Social-Economic Sciences. The library has 6 above-ground floors and 2 underground floors.
The entrance is oriented from the Student Square to the south into a high entrance hall. The hall connects to a bookstore selling books and scripts, and a free staircase links the entrance with the gallery on the 2nd floor. In the center of the layout is a communication block with a staircase, 2 elevators, 2 small book elevators, and space for service functions. In the western section of the 1st floor, book storage areas are designed.
The book storage further includes both underground floors 1.B, and 2.B, where the library building is connected to service and supply areas on the level of 2.B.
At the entrance level from the north on the 2nd floor, in addition to the gallery in the entrance hall, there is a literary café space with facilities and an adjoining exterior terrace. On the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors of this block, administrative support spaces for the library are designed, including essential service areas.
The main floor of the library – 5th floor primarily includes the area for open book selections, encompassing shelving for a total of 2660 linear meters of shelves. Part of the open selection is study spaces – a total of 120 places including 3 study boxes, each with 8 seats, an IT classroom for 16 people, administrative and service support areas, and a winter garden space. A reception desk and internet information stations are proposed at the entrance. On the 6th floor, inserted into the administrative part, a technical area is proposed.
Daylight permeates the space of open selections through a translucent copolymer façade complemented by windows. The system is enhanced with roof skylights above the study boxes. The minimalist exterior appearance of the copolymer translucent façade with transparent windows is supplemented only by individual elements – an escape fire staircase in a visible concrete tube, a wooden deck for the café. The interiors of the service and administrative parts are almost free of ceilings, with visible concrete in a dust-free finish complemented by colored accents – floor screeds, stairwell interior. The space for open selection with glass-walled study boxes features a metallic mesh ceiling with linear light fixtures.

Multifunctional Center

The architecture of the Multifunctional Center (MFC) is based on the concept of a building connected by a central foyer with an entrance from the south, above which distinct functionally diverse objects are articulated. In the space between them lies the so-called Student Square, encompassing the area between building D of the Faculty of Social-Economic Sciences and the future Faculty of Science pavilion A. This important living-gathering space connects the northern and southern faculties, with both central objects - University Library and Multifunctional Center - located in its center.
The entrance to the building is from two main levels. From the south to the 1.B level to the foyer space, connecting all above-ground parts, the high lobby includes an information reception desk, meeting spaces, which also serve as a necessary dispersal area for lecture halls.
On this level, two lecture halls for 90 people are designed, along with a large multifunctional lecture hall for 310 people, service spaces, and a connection to the rectorate building.
Small lecture halls are designed over two levels, with a foyer and a lecture hall for 180 people located on the 2nd floor. This hall is illuminated by four skylights with top lighting that can be dimmed.
The administrative building – the rectorate is five stories tall, connecting at the 1.B level to the common foyer, with another entrance directly from the Student Square on the 1st floor.
The individual floors include administrative spaces for the rectorate, economic administration, employee department, financial department, service operation IC, and spaces for the University of the Third Age.
Ceramic façades respond soberly to varying requirements for lighting in the offices, foyer, and various types of halls.
