The square where the market stands today is a residual area between two development phases of the city of Aarau. There used to be artisans here, whose workshops were demolished twenty years ago. The idea to cover the asphalted area and hold markets here led to a competition. It was won by
Quintus Miller and
Paola Maranta from Basel, who proposed not just the requested roof but an entire building that solved the complex urban situation. During the development of the structure, they collaborated with the now well-known to many Czechs
Jürg Conzett, who could be likened to the Swiss
Cecil Balmond. The external form was dictated by the facades of surrounding buildings. Functionally, it will not only serve traditional markets but will also host flea markets, festivals, and other events. The spaces between the densely arranged Douglas fir columns are left empty at the top and filled with a wooden wall in the lower half. Entrance is through two opposing eight-meter sliding doors. The wooden structure was coated with several layers of natural oil mixed with copper and aluminum pigments, which took away some of the wood's charm.
Total construction costs: 2.6 million CHF
Price per cubic meter: 538 CHF
