Family House in the Jizera Mountains

Family House in the Jizera Mountains
Address: Jizerské hory, Czech Republic
Completion:2021
Four years ago, a friend came to us who was considering building a log cabin in the Jizera Mountains. In addition to the log cabin, he wanted to build an auxiliary structure (a barn) that would serve as a garden house and technical facilities.
We discussed the assignment, options, and advantages of the individual buildings at length. In the end, we agreed to build the main house in a "modern" style as well. The main arguments were the connection of the building with the surrounding nature through large windows and the use of contemporary details and materials.
The concept of parallel masses was born, which create a terrace between them that has a more private character and is screened from the surroundings by the individual houses. At the same time, the concept maintains views of the landscape and a traditional village character and scale.
Both masses are designed in a modest form and materials.
The main mass is only disrupted by the recessed entry space, which creates a covered area in front of the large sliding windows from the living room. Conversely, a mass of the dormer is added to introduce light into the upper floors, similar in extent to the recessed entrance.
The barn is a completely utilitarian structure with large doors that can be fully opened, thus connecting the interior space with the surrounding nature.
Both houses are made of different façade materials. On the main building, we used wooden slats, while the barn features a stone façade made of local granite blocks.
Both buildings blended wonderfully into the surrounding nature and created a pleasant backdrop for the owners. For us, it was also a very interesting realization with a nice result.
