Our friends Lucie and Zdeněk approached me with the wish to develop a design for a family house while they were still looking for a plot for its construction. After much care in their selection, they chose a sloped forest plot near the Jevany ponds.
Due to the terrain configuration, the entrance to the house is on the upper floor. From the vestibule, there is access to a gallery with adjoining bedrooms. In the open space, the staircase descends to the ground floor around the dining table, which is the focal point of the house. The living hall is lowered by 525 mm compared to the ground floor and visually connects to the garden through the terrace.
An important theme of our design is surprise. The house intentionally appears austere from the outside, while inside it is intended to be as welcoming as possible; hence the floors, wall coverings, and furniture are made of honey-stained oak wood. The overall small volume of the house also creates a striking contrast with the open interior space.
The almost mystical atmosphere of the surroundings is enhanced by the corner cylindrical mass, which contains a circular bathroom with a view into the tree branches on the upper floor, and a small study open to the dining room and living room with a double-sided desk on the ground floor. In relation to the surroundings, the cylindrical tower is a distant reference to the romantic architecture of the 19th century.
The house is adorned with the year and a flagpole; included in the amenities are a fireplace and a sauna.
