Modernization of the former special school space

The space designated for the modernization of the former special school is located on the second floor of the elementary school building on Školní náměstí, near the center of the town of Lomnice nad Popelkou. The current state of the addressed space is inadequate and outdated in terms of teaching requirements. In our proposal, we aimed to meet all the demands for the specified areas – the auditorium (a place for gathering) and classrooms (2× language, kitchenette). Another important factor in our design was the variability of the given space. Our main goal was the "abolition" of the traditional corridor solution without direct natural light. We wanted to create a space for children that they would enjoy returning to and spend both teaching time and their free moments between classes. At the same time, we wanted the space to appear representative when parents visit the school for various ceremonial events organized by the school.
In the newly designed interior of the school space, we tried to use natural materials as much as possible for several reasons. Firstly, to ensure that the children, for whom the space is intended, feel comfortable here, and also from an educational perspective. The new solid partitions will be made of massive multilayer wooden panels, with insulation between them. Glazed partitions will combine load-bearing columns with glass infill. Linoleum-marmoleum, made from renewable natural materials, will be used on the floors. For the ceilings, we used fiberboards that have sound-absorbing properties for good acoustics in the proposed spaces. Most of the proposed materials will be kept in their natural – original color. A color accent will be added to the space with selected furniture in our chosen color combination of shades (green, yellow, pink, and blue).
The design aims to achieve timelessness in both the interior design and the variable options for using the given space. Our main goal (wish) is for children to happily come here to rest and spend their free time not only during breaks.
