Reconstruction of the barn
Address: Ohaře č.p. 1, Ohaře, Czech Republic
Project:2003-06
Completion:2007-09
Site Area:4300 m2

The house is designed for a family of four as an extension into an unused barn located in the center of a vast plot of land.

Architectural Solution
"Utilize and (but) preserve the specific space of the old barn".
The 150-year-old stone structure forms a sarcophagus for the new building, which is independent of the original barn construction. The house is inserted as a separate entity with a bedroom wing protruding from the volume of the original building. The characteristic qualities of the barn's interior - the size of the space, height, view into the trusses, and the materials used - have been preserved as much as possible by this solution.
The structure made of mixed stone masonry is freed from appendages and partially from infill walls between load-bearing columns. These are statically fixed with rods, and the opening in the western gable is created with a steel brace. Brick infill of the gables has been removed and replaced with horizontal lathing. The light wooden structure of the proposed house contrasts with the massive stone walls. The stone columns and the setback of the new facade into the original footprint provide adequate shading and create a sense of intimacy in the interior. A ceiling window in the living room allows a view into the open space of the trusses.
The wooden sandwich wall construction is horizontally clad with larch battens. This grid covers part of the window openings, thus minimizing visible windows and doors (not realized).
The garage for two cars consists of a wooden shelter, structurally derived from the ceiling structure and the louvered cladding of the house (not realized).

Spatial Solution
The floor plan of the house consists of two mutually perpendicular prisms. The longer mass forms the residential day core, to which a two-story mass of bedrooms is attached from the north.
From the eastern side, the main entrance to the house leads through a covered porch. From the hallway with a cloakroom, there is access to the living space. This consists of a kitchen nook with a dining table against the northern wall and a living area connecting to the terrace under the western gable. To the right of the entrance door, the hallway separates the parents' bedroom with a cloakroom, a bathroom, a storage room, and a guest room. A single-flight staircase, which is part of the living space, leads upstairs, where the children's bedrooms with a bathroom and laundry are situated. From the hallway and bathroom, one can access the walkable roof above the ground floor.
At the eastern gable, there is a boiler room (wood boiler) on the ground floor, accessible from the porch.

Construction
The construction was largely carried out as a self-build. The project authors did not have sufficient control over the execution of individual details. However, the builder's experience and intuition generally led them in the right direction. The interior furnishings were not part of the project.
