The area of the Richter Villa, which is owned by the Administration of Prague Castle, is bordered to the north by Na Opyši street, to the south by the Old Castle Stairs, and to the east by the buildings known as the Richter Houses.
In the past, the plot served as a representative garden with a vineyard. The Richter Villa, originally a classicist summer residence, changed its use from residential function to offices for the Ministry of the Interior and the Military Accommodation Administration. Since the 1990s, the building has not been used.
The Richter Villa occupies a dominant position on a rocky promontory between Klárov and Jelení Příkop. The southern slope of the rock above the Old Castle Stairs is known as the so-called Saint Wenceslas Vineyard, established by Charles IV. In contrast, the northern slope is densely overgrown and sharply descends to Na Opyši street.
What is unique is the location of the villa at the lower end of the promontory with exceptional views of the Prague skyline and the Belveder summer palace. The dominant view of the villa is from the serpentine Chotkovy Road, built in 1832. The realization of the classicist summer palace also dates back to this time.
The subject of the project was the reconstruction of the villa and the design of its extension for a restaurant, as well as the restoration of the Saint Wenceslas Vineyard, including the placement of new simple buildings related to the use and operation of the vineyard.
The fundamental approach to the architectural design of the entire area and the villa itself was to preserve and restore the original buildings and structures to the maximum extent, cleanse them of inappropriate modifications, especially from the second half of the 20th century, and supplement them with new elements that will be contemporary and clearly distinguishable as needed.
