The Hodslav Church was built in 1813 for one of the three oldest Evangelical parishes in Moravia. The necessity of construction modifications, along with changes in life within the Evangelical church, generated a project that integrates the new needs of the parish with a contemporary approach to the care of sacred buildings.
The design emphasizes the tectonics of the church, de-materializing the space from disturbing layers. Inappropriate color and material accumulations have been removed and replaced with a uniform finish in white-gray values and a floor made of solid wood and sandstone. The calm background highlights the existing symbols and details, which are carefully restored—from quality oak furnishings from the 1950s to small frescoes and stained glass. The readability of the space is enhanced by a new lighting concept. Locally, the block stone masonry is acknowledged, as well as the stone surrounds of the entrances. The newly designed elements have a contemporary detail, but the materials connect to the legacy of the church's furnishings. The typography of the verse is cultivated in the first field of the vault. Last but not least, the drainage of moisture and the heating of the church, as well as the adjacent exterior areas, are being addressed.
The spatial arrangement of the church has also undergone a transformation. The new shape of the stage in the presbytery and the removal of the pastor's pew allow for multi-purpose use of the space for all sacred and cultural activities, which are an integral part of today's life of the parish. The altar table and cross have been removed and replaced with a new Lord's table, thus highlighting the characteristic stained glass at the front of the church. Behind the entrance vestibule, facilities for church and social activities have been proposed. The organ in the choir had to be removed due to poor technical condition, but in its place, another layer of cultural life is emerging—a furniture setup for studying and archiving fragments of the church and documents from the community, replacing the lost Hodslav chronicle.
