Reconstruction of Okál-type house

Reconstruction of Okál-type house
Project:2014
Completion:2017
Built Up Area:184 m2
Site Area:1000 m2

The design is based on a limited budget for construction. The main motto of the design is the unification of the disparate elements of the house. This concept is applied both in the exterior and in the interior. The living space is open up to the ridge, is illuminated by new skylights, and its walls, ceilings, and floors are clad in pine plywood considering that the house is a wooden structure. Rooms with higher usage demands (bathroom, kitchen) are designed with maintenance-free materials and in a monochromatic finish.

The original catalog-type Okál house was built in the 1970s. The production of this type of house was mass-produced – it was one of the few standard houses available in socialist Czechoslovakia.
Due to the limited budget, no significant structural changes were made during the reconstruction. Therefore, the main motto of the proposal became the unification of the expression of the individual disparate elements. This concept was applied to both the interior and the exterior of the building.
The design focused primarily on transforming the attic. Added skylights and ceilings open to the gable ensured more light and space in the interior. The space was further divided into a day and night area. The main open living space extends between the kitchen on one side and the home cinema on the other – interconnected by a large dining area. The night area consists of a bedroom and a closet. A corridor connects the night and day areas, which also leads to the bathroom. The ground floor and basement remained untouched.
The walls and ceilings of the interior are clad in pine plywood to emphasize the wooden structure of the house. The floor is made of pine planks to match the wall material. Spaces with higher maintenance demands, such as the kitchen and bathroom, are designed with maintenance-free materials in a monochromatic color scheme.
The exterior is unified into an elegant white color with plastered walls and a metal roof that brings the originally rural character of the house closer to its urban surroundings. The house is insulated with mineral wool to meet current thermal requirements.
