Renovation of an apartment in a panel building in Prague's Pankrác

Renovation of an apartment in a panel building in Prague's Pankrác
Collaboration:Jozef Černák (construction section)
Address: Hvězdova, Nusle, Prague, Czech Republic
Completion:2011
Area:33 m2

The original intention of the apartment owner to replace the existing apartment core with a new one changed during consultations with the architect to a complete reconstruction of the apartment. Besides the load-bearing reinforced concrete walls, the construction modifications affected all elements in the apartment. The partition walls made of particle board and fiberboard were replaced with aerated concrete blocks, which were covered with drywall.
Ceilings with unsightly seams between the panels were fitted with drywall ceilings in all rooms. These are set back from the walls by about 10 cm. The resulting groove elegantly conceals curtain tracks and the rails of sliding wooden doors that replaced the classic hinged doors.
The only requirement of the apartment owner was the installation of a bathtub instead of the original impractical shower tray with a seat, leaving everything else to the architect.
In the WC and bathroom area, large format tiles and black or white lacquered glass were used.
At the end of the hallway, which leads to the bathroom and WC, a mirror has been installed across the entire height of the room. This solution visually enlarges the space and creates the impression of a double-length corridor from the hallway. The bathroom was also provided with natural light through a longitudinal lighting opening in the partition between the kitchen and the bathroom.
All original furniture was preserved, only supplemented with a new kitchen unit made by a carpenter and built-in wardrobes that were purchased at a department store.
