Reconstruction and extension of a rondocubist villa

How to preserve the original atmosphere of the rondocubist villa while meeting contemporary housing demands? How to solve the absence of a garage on a small plot? How to incorporate a modern extension into the villa without disrupting the character of this unique building? Several parallel steps led us to our defined goal.

First, it was necessary to thoroughly cleanse the villa of insensitive interventions, during which the original elements were replaced or damaged. These were restored to the historical villa and complemented with modern innovations that respect and interpret the forms of rondocubism. Basic geometric shapes play a key role in the mutual dialogue – triangle, semicircle, circle, cone, pyramid, cylinder, and sphere.

At the same time, the functional use of all floors was reassessed to ensure that the operation is logical and serves a multi-generational family well. The heart of the house became an open space on the ground floor, which includes the living area, dining room, and kitchen. Together with the hallway, vestibule, and toilet, it forms the social part of the house where the family gathers. From the living room, there is access to a new generous balcony oriented towards the southern garden. The social area is connected upstairs to the private floor of the homeowners with a bedroom and facilities. The residential attic serves the youngest family members. A partially embedded basement includes, on the southern side with access to the garden, a room for the grandparents and a home office.

The existing mass of the villa seamlessly connects from the northwest to a single-story reinforced concrete extension in the form of a green hill rising from east to west towards the street corner and descending from the north towards the green garden. This unobtrusive extension, which maximally takes advantage of the site's topography, conceals a garage and sauna with facilities. Its mass does not compete with the original house; rather, it complements it. Together with the southern balcony and glazed vestibule from the east, it forms a harmonious whole in dialogue between the old and the new.
