"The river flows, accompanied by the bank and the incoming springs. The outflow from the plane tree grove, the connection with the bank, and access from the hillside were the main motives that determined the raison d'être of the pavilion. An inner desire that can be nothing else but: an introduction into mutual relation – a consensual embodiment of the idea."
RCR Arquitectes
We headed to Olot almost immediately after crossing the Spanish-French border. From the beginning, there seemed to be a disconnect between the size of the city and the costly projects we visited here. Even the arrival via the new four-lane highway was striking. After passing the technopark, we visited a restaurant more typical of world metropolises. Following that came the athletic stadium, equipped for hosting championship competitions. A quality surface on the running track, a perfectly trimmed soccer field with artificial irrigation – all of this was set in the forest on the edge of the city – unfenced and accessible to anyone who felt like engaging in some sports. To this day, we ponder where such significant funds came from in such a small town for these bold investments.
Behind the quality projects in Olot is, almost without exception, the studio RCR Arquitectes. Local patriots build only a few dozen kilometers from their office. Yet, the standard of their projects is at least at a European level.
One of their smallest projects consists of changing cabins with a sunbathing platform on the bank near the springing stream. The pavilion is located relatively far from the city in a natural volcanic park. Rusted plates reinforce the access paths and the footbridge, both from the same studio. For swimming, I could imagine a better place than having to change in a metal cabin, lay down a blanket on massive steel plates, and then go dip into a muddy stream shaded by tall trees. When I first learned about the bathing pavilion from magazines, I was captivated. However, after seeing it with my own eyes, the euphoria faded, but the enchantment of the landscape and RCR remained.
