Parking garages in Ostrava

Parking garages in Ostrava
Address: Černá Louka, Ostrava, Czech Republic
Investor:Garáže Ostrava a.s.
Completion:2005

Černá Louka in Ostrava is a large area in the very center of the city, which has served and continues to serve exhibition purposes and for the recreation of residents. The lack of parking spaces has created the need to build capacity parking in this area.
The parking facility has one underground floor and three above-ground, with parking also possible on the roof of the building. The facility is located in the heritage zone of the city of Ostrava, so its height was limited.
The design solution is based on the conditions of the given site - a two-lane ramp in the middle, with parking on the sides of the ramp and at the ends of the building. Spiral staircases, an elevator, and a small reception area serving the operation of Černá Louka are located in the corners.
The structure of the building was prescribed by the investor of the construction - Garáže Ostrava - a prefabricated reinforced concrete skeleton with visible beams and panel ceiling structures.
The architectural solution aims to maximize the suppression of all negative effects from the size and operation of the multi-storey parking. To avoid having to equip the building with expensive ventilation, it is designed as open, using climbing plants on the facade of the building. The facade consists of parts made of expanded metal, hot-dip galvanized, in a natural color, which prevent rain and snow from entering the building and allow each above-ground floor to be well ventilated. Additionally, this expanded metal was intended to serve as a support structure for evergreen climbing plants, which were supposed to protect the building from rain and snow, reduce noise levels when vehicles enter, and limit dust during the operation of the parking lot. Furthermore, they were aesthetically meant to link this building with the mature greenery of Černá Louka. Unfortunately, this greening was not successfully realized.
Complementing the facade are central protruding parts made of polycarbonate panels and round elevator and staircase towers made of the same material in red frames. Canopies above the entrances and the entrance to the building, as well as the coverage of the exit ramp to the roof of the building, are made from the same materials.
After five years, the investor requested roofing for the last floor of the garage. This was done using a steel structure and rounded facade elements made of polycarbonate to maintain the building's expression.

The building received an honorable mention in the Ostrava competition House of the Year 1999.
