OndřejovOndřejov is a village in the district of Prague-East, Central Bohemia Region. It is located approximately fifteen kilometers southeast of the town of Říčany, about 35 km southeast of Prague, on the southern slopes of the Pecný Mountain (545 m above sea level). Approximately 1,800 inhabitants live here. It is particularly known for its observatory – a facility of the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The historical core of the village has been a town heritage zone since 2003.
May 9 Square – Current StateMay 9 Square covers an area of ~ 2.4 ha. The morphology of the terrain, combined with the preserved folk architecture of the village's buildings, offers beautiful vistas. The space has enormous potential to become a sought-after place for local residents as well as tourists.
The historical core of the village lacks a cohesive concept. Fragmentation, confusion, and a large number of small areas without clearly defined functions have become the current common denominator of the entire square. The church, the main landmark of the square, lacks connections to its surroundings and is surrounded by the massive crowns of nearby trees for most of the year. Along with the school and post office complex, it creates an impenetrable block in the very center of the square.
A road with transit traffic harshly cuts through the public space, dividing it into two halves and creating both a spatial and visual barrier. The preserved row of trees provides some softening of this profile.
In the near future, the elementary school will be relocated to a new facility. The town will thus have the opportunity to breathe new life into the square and strengthen active life there.
