Together with Iva and Radim, we realized the interior reconstruction of an apartment in Prague's New Town in an apartment building from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which has preserved its original beautiful elements such as door fillings, flooring, and other details.
We unanimously agreed that we would respect the original atmosphere in the design of the expected construction modifications. We managed to preserve all the historical elements of the apartment and highlight their execution in traditional white color, whether it concerns wooden casement windows, the original paneling under their sills, or the beautiful interior doors and parquet flooring. At the same time, we created a pleasant and cozy place for the whole family to live.
We intentionally limited the construction modifications to connecting two large rooms facing the street, resulting in a spacious living room with a kitchen, dining area, office, and a large library. The central entrance hall separates the bedroom and the children's room, oriented towards the courtyard. The builders wished to have a small bathroom as part of the bedroom, for which we found the ideal space in the location of the original miniature kitchen or once a maid's room.
The generosity of the main living area is emphasized by built-in storage cabinets, which are uniformly and elegantly hidden behind a light birch plywood wall. This wall cleverly integrates a pantry, a small technical room with a boiler, including cleaning and laundry facilities, as well as a built-in wine cabinet or space for toys and a home router. The wall smoothly transitions through a smaller work nook with a desk into an open library, beneath which is a large custom-made sofa for comfortable lounging for the whole family while watching a movie.
In the center of the room is a large dining table, connected to the kitchen island, both made from solid ash wood.
The builders also wished to place wallpaper on the bedroom walls, complemented by high white moldings that connect to the original wooden elements of the apartment. In the children's room, the height of the room is utilized for a sleeping loft for the children, with the staircase also serving as a library.
Soft shades of white and pastel tones of the wallpaper, combined with light birch accents, create a contemporary pleasant living space in the context of a historical apartment in New Town.
