Conversion of Schmitt's Textile Factories into the City OfficeThe task was the reconstruction of the existing production facility in the center of Semily into an administrative building for the City Office.
The existing building, dating back to 1884, was surrounded by numerous annexes and shelters created during the operation of the production facility. The design anticipated the removal of these additions, highlighting the main mass and character of the building, and leaving it as a standalone structure. For the above reasons, there arose a need to enhance and extend Riegrovo náměstí towards the information center, which is also integrated into the entire space. This creates a sufficient dispersal area in front of the new City Office building. The dispersal area is complemented by urban furniture and, in the future, artistic elements that complete the entire concept of Riegrovo náměstí.
The reconstruction of the building itself is based on cleaning the layout into one hall space. This results in a space with existing cast-iron columns and a wooden beam ceiling. The center of this space is dedicated to a public hall, creating an atrium-like area. The placement of offices and administration is designed as standalone units per departments by implanting separate "boxes" around the perimeter of the building, one might say independently of the existing building, due to the significant clear height of the ceiling structures.
On the ground floor, there is a dispersal hall along with a refreshment option serving the public. After information for citizens, the cash desk, and the postal services, there are departments for population registration, transport, passports, and social care. Access to the second floor is made possible via the preserved existing staircase, where again there is an adjacent dispersal hall and, again because of the significant clear height, offices placed in standalone "boxes" including the social department, administrative department, construction, building office, environmental department, transport department, trade office, and one meeting room.
The attic is used more for semi-public operations for functions such as meeting rooms and town council meetings, exhibitions, presentations of the town, etc.
The entire operation of the office building is barrier-free and is complemented by social facilities on each floor.
From an architectural and artistic perspective, there is an effort to return the building to its original expression, which is reflected in the window fillings, the shaping of the facade, and the visibility of columns and ceiling structures.
Therefore, the new function and operation of the building are situated into lightweight "module" elements called "boxes" colored and materialized with the possibility of variability and flexibility according to the operational requirements of the City Office in its further existence.
From a structural point of view, the building is reconstructed without interventions into load-bearing structures, with significant changes in new window fillings and the addition of a new shaft for stairs with an elevator at the rear of the building.
