City Hall Graz
Address: Messeplatz 1, Graz, Austria
Investor:Město Štýrský Hradec
Project:1998-2001
Completion:2001-02

The municipal hall in Graz is among the most famous works of Austrian architect Klaus Kady. The boldly projected edge of the roof extending over the street creates an unmistakable landmark for every visitor arriving in the Styrian capital from the south. The 150-meter-long roof structure rests on just four columns. The spacing between the columns is 58 m, and the cantilevered roof at both ends measures 46 m. The cantilever of the roof is so massive that even the tram stop in the middle of the road does not require its own roofing but instead takes advantage of the generosity of the municipal hall, which covers the entrance square of over 2,000 m².
Equally generous as the eighteen-meter-high foyer are the interior spaces, where social events can be held for up to 11,000 participants. Everything is maximally clear, open, and transparent, which facilitates the orientation of visitors to the municipal hall. The large-scale space is ready to host various exhibitions, sports matches, conferences, and television broadcasts.
A nine-story glass tower is attached to the multipurpose hall from the north, where smaller exhibition halls, conference rooms, and office spaces are located to serve the needs of the local municipality.
