Would you choose between a parking lot and a public space?Paasdorf is a small “street village” in Lower Austria. The task of feld72 was to place “Cultural Landscape Paasdorf” - an art project known far beyond its borders - in the square using a striking symbol.
The design attempts to synergistically combine two formal components: the mundane (local residents) and the attention-grabbing (visitors).
The square radically changes its appearance depending on its use (various needs throughout the day and seasons). The square and the parking lot are not separated into mono-functional zones but are mixed together to create a unity that can be understood and utilized in many different ways. Each parking lot is something quite different when not occupied by cars – whether it's a wooden terrace, a shallow pool filled with water, a playground, seating, urban landscape...
The bus stop – Wolkon – serves as a landmark and informational compass. In a way, it serves as a “stage” for everyday life as well as special events. The accessible roof creates a place to relax, a platform for a DJ, a speaker’s corner, and an open-air gallery...
How the public will use this square will always remain the responsibility of its users.
