The Bernardo Bader Atelier is located in the district town of Dornbirn at the foot of the Bregenz Forest. Its minimalist approach to traditional forms can be experienced over a relatively small area. Bernardo Bader is a member of the advisory board for mountain municipalities (Andelsbuch, Zwischenwasser) and has been a member of the expert council for spatial development issues for the entire Vorarlberg since 2012.
In the past, Bernardo Bader built a new rectory in the village, redesigned the square in front of the church, and expanded the local cemetery. In mid-August of last year, when the municipality surpassed 1,000 residents, the consecration of the Salgenreute chapel took place, which is the latest contribution to the rich architectural mosaic in Krumbach. As is customary with Bader, the chapel is again a combination of subconsciously familiar shapes, local materials, and high-quality craftsmanship.
In this case, the client was not the municipality or the local rectory but the local residents living in the isolated areas of Au, Zwing, and Salgenreute, which corresponds to the scale and capacity of the small wooden structure (forty square meters with four rows of benches for sixteen people) located on a meadow southwest of Krumbach.
The steep roof more than doubles the height of the perimeter walls. The compact appearance of the building is enhanced by small wooden shingles covering the walls, gable, and roof. This type of cladding is characteristic of the local region. Unlike the ubiquitous panoramic views of the mountain giants, upon entering the chapel, one finds themselves behind bronze doors in an intimate wooden space narrowing towards the window behind the altar. The window offers a view into the nearby grove, which does not disrupt contemplation.
Equally significant as the building itself is the pedestrian approach leading to the chapel, as well as its sensitive placement on the terrain break of the mountain ridge.
