Des Moines Public Library

Des Moines Public Library
The library is an integral part of the new Western Gateway Park. This urban area is currently undergoing extensive reconstruction, and the library along with the park will become the main points of urban renewal in Des Moines. The library, located at the eastern end of the park, serves as a link between the park and downtown Des Moines. On one hand, it responds to the urban block, but at the same time, it expands into the park, flowing into the surrounding landscape, shaping outdoor spaces, and giving visitors the feeling of being in the park while reading a book inside. The Gateway Gallery is a place for various activities. It partially shapes the public path that runs through the building, reinforcing its character as a bridge between the city and the park, and further blurs the boundary between the park and the library.
Administrative and service areas are located in the east wing. The bookshelves are arranged in such a way that one can constantly see into the park, creating a sense of openness and transparency. In addition to publications, the library also offers an educational section, a children's corner, and a conference wing with a café, creating a space for a vibrant public life. The two-story concrete structure rests on an underground parking lot and is completely wrapped in a glass-metal energy-efficient envelope. Between the two glass surfaces is a network of copper that reduces the penetration of sunlight and heat inside. In the long term, this envelope will significantly lower energy costs. This copper mesh is the only shading element that also ensures an unobstructed view into the park. Subtle transformations (moiré effect) take place on the surface of the panels, creating a uniform yet constantly changing façade that emphasizes the organic shape of the building.
