“On the shore of the Gooimeer lake in Huizen, five architecturally striking buildings are lined up on the water. Each building contains 13 apartments arranged to allow its residents to enjoy the sunlight and the surrounding environment as much as possible. The result is a tapering volume capturing the sun with large terraces at the back of the building and panoramic windows facing the lake. The buildings are clad in rough unpolished aluminum sheets playing with reflective shades of the gray Dutch water and weather.”

Five 'sphinxes', each containing thirteen apartments, are arranged to make the most of their location and sunlight. Each of the blocks tapers towards the water in plan view, maximizing the unobstructed view of the lake from both the shore and the apartments themselves 'sphinxes'. Going upwards, each floor has one less apartment unit. The resulting shape resembles a sphinx with sunlit terraces situated on the sloping 'backs' of this mythical creature. The layouts of the penthouses differ in each of the blocks. At the same time, prominent 'heads' have developed at the top, creating a remarkable panorama of the buildings from a distance. The sphinxes stand on a shore covered with reeds, creating a gradual transition between the water and the terrain while also serving as a hydrophytic filter to purify the water. A sloping concrete pier cuts through the reeds and connects the sphinxes to the shore. Residents can drive along the pier and park in an underground garage that also serves as a foundation basin for the superstructure. The facades are clad in silver horizontal strips of metal. Public spaces have been designed as an integral part of the overall house project. Throughout the entire building, the main corridor transforms into a viewing bastion, a surf shore, a village green, a windy balcony, or a fishing pier.
