The Pilsen pizzeria Da Pietro has gained such a reputation that people would regularly travel from Prague for a quick visit for what many consider the best Neapolitan pizza in the country. Therefore, the opening of a branch in Prague’s Vinohrady was not an illogical step. The construction program was based on two fundamental pillars: a custom-made pizza oven by an Italian master baker and a custom-made statue of Diego Maradona in a Napoli jersey with "Da Pietro" written on the chest.
Cultural-social insert: the million-strong Naples has one main football club, SSC Napoli. This is a fundamental difference compared to, for example, Milan, where the fan base is divided between two major rivals, Inter and AC. In Naples, this leads to a single, literally city-wide shared value that extremely amplifies the general Italian passion for football. Therefore, led by the icon Diego, football forms the city’s identity more strongly than the nearby Vesuvius, and Naples paradoxically symbolizes the turquoise color of the football jerseys more than the yellow-red combination of the official emblem.
However, back to the architecture. It was without a doubt that blue must play a significant role; excessive use of it could result in a restaurant that feels Greek. Thus, a key question arose: which color ideally complements the baby blue of SSC Napoli? Of course, pink.
Therefore, pink flooring dominates the interior, from which two essential blocks emerge: a welcome counter at the entrance and a gargantuan tasting table for 18 beings. The floor is lined with one row of blue ceramic tiles, which rise to the necessary height in appropriate places (cloakroom, bar). The materials and colors of the remaining elements are rather subdued to emphasize the striking colors and the cleanliness of the entire interior. It is worth mentioning the rough acoustic plaster that closes the space at the ceiling and the artificial stone from which the table tops and kitchen and bar counters are made.
The kitchen, which opens to both the restaurant and the street, is dominated by the pizza oven, and behind it is a small niche that houses the aforementioned statue of Maradona. We discovered the niche on our first visit, and it was immediately clear to us that Diego would be carved for this opening. Care was taken in formulating a generous entrance space, and behind the pink counter opens a spacious cloakroom for coats. A long longitudinal view into the main room is closed off by a glass-brick wine cellar. The intricate layout is utilized for working with different types of seating: in addition to the tasting table, there is also high seating, a bench, and smaller tables in the spirit of Italian bistros.
A key benefit of the space is the abundance of natural light sources that come from both original and new skylights, windows, and a wooden extension to the courtyard, creating an unmistakable atmosphere during the day. The evening atmosphere is enhanced by warm artificial lighting in the form of light bulbs.
