Ghost in the shell
Client: a dynamically expanding network of coffee shops friendly to working visitors
Location: concrete-glass standard of developer architecture
Program: coffee shop with a bakery
Fundamental limit of the space: floor area
Fundamental limit of the program: hygiene and temperature separation of the bakery
Value of the place: complete cross transparency
Solution: independent object in flowing space
The intensely yellow block with windows into the bakery touches nothing but the floor. We insert an activating object into neutral space. It contains all the necessary facilities for employees and visitors while preserving the airiness of the space. The orthogonal geometry of the inserted box derives from the logic of the building's supporting system and, in dialogue with the diagonally running lines of the light facade, creates informal "residual" spaces for seating of various characters. The monochromatic materiality of the yellow ceramic cladding is complemented by gray-black elements of the furniture and bar. The transparent approach to creating an enclosed space within an enclosed space, in order to maintain its true identity, is analogous to the transparency of the bread-making process.
