Café Una
Address: Museumsplatz 1, Wien, Austria
Investor:Architekturzentrum Wien
Project:1999
Completion:2001
Area:100 m2

The Context: From the Messepalast to the Museumsquartier
The Location: The former imperial stables
The Architecture: Military-like, severe, hard, authoritarian. Even the sky is framed and disciplined in the courtyards.

The appropriation of the location by the artists was reactionary, opportunistic, impertinent, invasive, rebellious, easy going, constantly modified, and always changing.

Then came the project of the Museumsquartier. It was a heavyweight, 15 years of decisions, studies, and construction sites.
Why is it that usually things become rigid and freeze as soon as architecture manifests itself? One does not live any more, one looks, one changes from the side of the players to that of the spectator, to the “museification”, from refutation to official art, from the ephemeral to the definitive.

The cafeteria
The project of the cafeteria in the Architekturzentrum Wien is like an act of resistance against the official project of the Museumsquartier. It is supposed to be different through lightness, through liveliness – the way it was before. It seemed as if we only needed a big blue sky, a kind of transposition into another world, a dream.
