The Petřiny housing estate in Prague 6 was built in the 1950s on an airy elevation above the Veleslavín valley. Its accessibility to the center, rich civic amenities, and proximity to recreational areas have made it a sought-after place to live in recent years.
The sober and clearly laid-out structure of Petřiny, loosened in areas connecting to greenery, provides the foundations for gradual densification with individual buildings, which give the entire area a new, qualitatively higher character.
One of these is the residential building on Na Okraji Street. The construction, located on the site of the original single-story self-service store, urbanistically accepts the existing street grid, but its mass, material, and color solution significantly diverge from the surrounding development. The richly detailed façade of the building is purposefully "broken" by the multitude of seemingly heterogeneous window openings, balconies, loggias, and terraces, declaring the architect's effort for an individual approach to the layout of each apartment. This effort is also supported by the chosen materials. The airy and precise solution of glazed areas at the ground floor intended for the public contrasts with the colorful wooden cladding of the roof extensions and the use of grassy terraces at selected apartments.
Thus designed, the house in the environment of monotonous construction from previous years can be understood as a manifestation of an individual approach to mass housing, which is enabled by new technologies and construction methods of today.
