Apartment with a stage
The material gently delicate, but spatially uncompromising solution significantly increased the living qualities of the cramped apartment on the ground floor in Žižkov. This project was a specific and heartfelt affair – it is an apartment for our friend, who is also the founder of the studio U/U, which cultivates public spaces in Czech municipalities, particularly with excellent skateparks. Mutual trust was therefore a significant aspect of the design and implementation.
The basic principle of the complete reconstruction lay in the creation of a generous living space, which was established on the footprint of the original kitchen, dining room, and bedroom. The unification of the layout allowed light access from two directions and enhanced visual contact with the greenery in the courtyard. The sanitary facilities and entrance hallway were also completely reconstructed, but their layout changed only in the removal of the door to the former bedroom.
The main and only room is dominated by two key elements representing two main functions: the kitchen and a multifunctional podium, which serves as a bed, storage space, library, wardrobe, and bench. A wooden block for sleeping, a pink block for cooking. The former bedroom has effectively transformed into a platform, thus maintaining its function with a slight exaggeration. The orientation of the bed and its elevated position provide a pleasant and calming view of the greenery. The platform forms the compositional basis of the space, and its compactness supports the airiness and informal atmosphere.
The dialogue between the living and service sections of the apartment is emphasized by the materials used and their distinct color scheme. The bathroom, kitchen, toilet, and hallway – all in potential contact with water – are defined by the pink color of the furniture, flooring, and tiles, while storage spaces, and above all the multifunctional platform, are made of birch plywood. To create a softer expression for the apartment, circular lights and mirrors were chosen.
