With a few years' delay, I had the opportunity to continue with the reconstruction of another of the rental apartments in the Nusle apartment villa.
Creating a new space that builds upon the already existing attic apartments, but does not directly quote them in its expression, was a very interesting task.
The apartment is located on the second floor and, compared to the attic reconstruction, has a generous ceiling height that predetermined a relatively different atmosphere.
In the implementation of the reconstruction, it is important to process the energy of the past that the place has, shift it into the present, and create an environment that meets the needs of today's life.
Just like in the attic apartments, in this reconstruction, the use of glass partitions allowed natural light to enter previously dark enclosed areas of the apartment, making it very airy and open.
The kitchen with the dining area is separated from the living space only by a light curtain, thus co-creating a large multifunctional space typical of contemporary living. A small balcony, which previously served more for functional purposes, was successfully connected to the dining room and kitchen by changing the layout. The bathroom, even though it has no windows, is positioned in the middle of the layout and receives natural light throughout the day, which enters through the glass partition mainly from the adjacent bedroom. For greater intimacy, the view from the bedroom into the bathroom can be completely closed off by drawing the curtain. The shape of the mirror in the bathroom is reflected in the graphics on the glass wall, creating an imaginary window that allows a view through the room into the garden. At night, under artificial light, this infinite circular reflection in the mirror evokes moonlight.
The choice of materials was influenced by the type of future living, which is closely related to its cost. In addition to the aforementioned glass partitions, similar, cheaper materials as in the attic apartments were selected. Water-resistant coatings have been used on the bathroom walls, and the built-in furniture is made of pine plywood this time. The original parquet flooring was merely sanded down, supplemented in places, and unified with a stain. The grain of the pine plywood is transformed into prints on foils applied to the glass partitions. The color combination of bright blue along with the honey color of the plywood evokes the summer atmosphere of the sea, sand, sky, and fields.
