Národní divadloThe National Theatre, a neo-Renaissance building designed by architects Josef Zítek and Josef Schulz, features rich external and internal decorations consisting of outstanding works by Czech authors from the 19th century – Mikoláš Aleš, František Ženíšek, Vojtěch Hynaise, and Josef Václav Myslbek.
AssignmentOur task was to design a contemporary element for the environment of the main foyer and the first gallery foyer. In total, 3 bar counters, functioning as a social point, a place for meeting. The bar counters will serve as a refreshment point and thus complement the center of social life during theatrical performances.
Basic ConceptThe inserted element reflects the period of its creation in its appearance but simultaneously utilizes materials that correspond with and suitably fit into the historical interior of the building. An inserted element that does not draw excessive attention.
A simple mass, functional form, material restraint.
A simple brass frame within which is embedded a marble cube. The whole is complemented by a glazed refrigerated display case. Moreover, the whole mass rests on a slightly elevated pedestal, making the counter appear lighter and creating an impression of levitation in space.
Technical InformationEach bar counter is mobile, allowing for shape and spatial variability during various types of events.
The simple external form is balanced by the complexity of the installed technologies. During the fifteen-minute break, it is necessary to serve up to 1000 guests; all installed devices, especially their arrangement, must facilitate this. All components form one large gastronomic machine.
The counters are equipped with lockable refrigerated boxes, storage spaces, and built-in appliances, with a glazed refrigerated display case at the top serving to present selected delicacies.
Gift to the National TheatreThe bar counters were completed and first presented at the season opening in September 2018 during the performance of the opera Libuše by Bedřich Smetana for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czech Republic, directed by the director of the National Theatre, Prof. MgA. Jan Burian.
The entire realization was conceived as a sponsorship gift to the theatre for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czech Republic.
