Corner buildings have historically been a significant means of creating public spaces, prominent streets, squares, and parks. They often found themselves at the boundaries of different worlds. They served as meeting places or acted as landmarks. Compared to other buildings, they were sought after for their prominence and openness to the surrounding world.
One such building is the currently undergoing reconstruction of the office building at the corner of Ke Karlovu and Kateřinská streets. The building dates back to the 1960s. From its inception, it served as an administrative building for the energy sector and was part of a larger set of buildings in natural inclusion.
In designing the new appearance of the building, we aimed to restore its dignity and importance as a corner object. To highlight the building while not excluding it from the collection of structures to which it naturally belongs both architecturally and operationally. Our effort was to simplify the building and find it a new expressive form.
This led us to the use of a protruding facade. Its metal panels are a new, dominant, expressive element that protects the building from the sun and additionally gives it an industrial character. Through the use of a protruding facade, we achieved the suppression of the existing formality of the building, characterized by regularly repeating windows. Everything that happens on the facade is hidden behind these panels.
The interior of the building hides, in addition to the traditional structure of the office landscape, a rich internal world of various spaces that are architecturally conceived.
