Brno announces an art competition for the design of a flood protection wall on the Svratka River

The statutory city of Brno announces an open one-phase artistic competition for the design of "Artistic Interpretation of the Flood Barrier on the Svratka River" in the section of Bakalovo nábřeží. The goal of the competition is to transform this concrete wall into a work of art that enriches the public space, strengthens the local community, and increases the attractiveness of the revitalized area in the city center.

Art in Public Spaces and Protection Against Vandalism

Flood protection measures in this part of Brno significantly influence the character of the urban landscape. Therefore, the city is looking for an artistic solution that will bring color, creativity, and a story to this part of town. The artistic concept is also intended to help combat vandalism—higher aesthetic quality of a place often contributes to its greater protection.

Authors of proposals can work with a wide range of artistic approaches— from authors' texts to drawings and realistic or abstract motifs. Important is the respect for the place, the character of the embankment, views from surrounding buildings, and also technical requirements given by the wall's visible concrete material.

Height: 2-3 m
Surface: exposed concrete without anti-graffiti coating
Visibility: among other things from the Winning Group Arena

In addition to the main wall, participants may optionally propose conceptual solutions for two additional walls on Poříčí and Táborského nábřeží, thereby inspiring the city for future implementations.

Awards and Budget

1st place: 100,000 CZK
2nd place: 75,000 CZK
3rd place: 50,000 CZK

Awards for selected non-prized proposals: 25,000 CZK
Budget for implementation: max. 1,250,000 CZK excluding VAT

The total budget for the competition and implementation is set at
1,500,000 CZK excluding VAT.

Submission of Proposals:

Physical part by August 25, 2025, by 12:00 PM
Digital part by August 25, 2025, by 11:59 PM

Implementation of the Work: by December 31, 2025
