Biography
Renée Gailhoustet was a French architect originally from Oran, Algeria, who became renowned for her postmodern social housing complexes in Paris and its surroundings. She initially studied philosophy but later transitioned to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she studied architecture under Marcel Lods. She graduated in 1961 and then joined the studio of Roland Dubrulle, where she worked alongside Jean Renaudie on the urban renewal of the center of Ivry-sur-Seine, advocating for the idea of terraced housing. In 1964, she established her own studio focusing on new approaches to urban planning and social housing primarily in the suburbs of Paris. In addition, she designed two structures on the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. She believed that “every resident can utilize the city according to their desires.” From 1973 to 1975, she taught at the École Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris.
