Czech Těšín - Builders will begin repairing the main building of the Těšín Theatre in Czech Těšín in the Karviná region in April. They will start by replacing the glass in the building's facade. These works will be carried out while the theatre is still in full operation. The replacement will cost six million crowns. The building will be closed to the public in the middle of the year when the second phase of renovations, worth around 111 million crowns, is scheduled to begin. The Moravian-Silesian Region is currently looking for a company to carry out the work. The theatre's spokesperson Iva Lupková informed ČTK about this today.

"The selection procedure for the contractor is currently underway," said Lukáš Curylo, deputy governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region for culture and heritage care.

From the beginning of April to the end of May, according to him, the glass sections of the theatre's facade will be replaced first, specifically a series of entrance doors and large windows of the gallery on the floor above. In the middle of the year, the main part of the renovation of the 1961 building is expected to begin. The work is set to last until the autumn of 2025.

"The Těšín Theatre will undergo a really significant transformation, becoming a theatrical and cultural center that will offer not only classic theatrical performances but also other options for the people of Czech Těšín and its surroundings. It will be a space for informal gatherings with cultural, creative, and educational programs. Essentially, the entire building will be reconstructed, which will receive new facilities, a hall, and a foyer. A big draw will certainly be the seating on the green roof and the observatory," Curylo added.

The theatre's director Petr Kracik supplemented that in the first half of this year, the theatre should perform in the main hall or in alternative spaces in building C. "However, the acting, production, and administrative operations will continue to function. Although in a limited capacity and in alternative spaces, the audience will not miss out on any new performances even in the next season," Kracik said.

The Těšín Theatre in Czech Těšín was established in 1945. Six years later, the first Czech stage was complemented by a Polish one. The puppet stage Bajka has been part of the theatre since 2008. Currently, the Těšín Theatre is the only professional Czech theatre that includes three artistic ensembles performing in two different languages. This is related to the strong Polish minority in the Těšín area. Many prominent actors have passed through the theatre, including Květa Fialová, Bořivoj Navrátil, and Josef Somr.
