In recent years, there has been an increase in mandatory requirements for the thickness of insulating materials to more than double. Many houses that owners insulated according to earlier regulations are now in a condition that requires "insulation over insulation."

Previously, insulation was commonly done to a thickness of 6 cm. The requirements for insulation have changed, and the current required values are significantly stricter. They correspond to approximately 14 cm of insulation in the insulation system for low-energy houses or 20-25 cm of insulation in the insulation system for passive houses.
Owners of previously insulated buildings must therefore seek ways to meet the new current requirements of the European Directive EPBD II on the energy performance of buildings. The solution is either to dismantle the original ETICS and replace it with a new, more effective one, or to add another layer of insulation to the existing one. The second option was uncertain until last autumn.

The expected lifespan according to the certification is 25 years!
A certified solution for “insulation over insulation” has emerged in the market — the STX.THERM SANA system. This system has the prerequisites for long-term durability, requires lower investment costs, and reduces the ecological burden and carbon footprint of the building.

Certified insulation over existing insulation safely improves the energy parameters of the building. The Spiral Anksys injected fastening system is the only one certified for the method of rehabilitation and doubling of unstable ETICS. The lifespan of this fastening has been verified in laboratories to be at least 25 years!

The new special insulation system STX.THERM SANA, together with the Spiral Anksys injected fastening system, thus represents the only certified and long-term solution for doubling and rehabilitating problematic insulation with impaired stability.

STX.THERM SANA uses components that have been long-term verified in practice. In its 20 years of existence, the company STOMIX has produced and supplied materials for insulating more than 12,000,000 m2. The high quality of the components guarantees the long-term durability of the repairs made.

The special anchor Spiral Anksys is an integral part of the STX. THERM SANA system.

Example of additional reinforcement of older insulation in Žďár nad Sázavou
An example of the specific use of the STX.THERM SANA system in practice could be the additional insulation of the apartment building at Dolní 13-23 in Žďár nad Sázavou. In 2002, it was insulated with EPS of a thickness of 60 mm. This insulation already moved the dew point outside the structure and provided the owners with reduced energy consumption, but it no longer complied with current normative requirements. The owner therefore decided to add additional insulation layers of 80 mm thickness. Doubling the ETICS with anchoring needed to be executed over a total area of 730 m2.

The investor naturally sought a solution that would be effective, reliable, and as cost-effective as possible. They had a comparative calculation made of the classic solution and the new insulation over insulation system. The result clearly favored the new system. Specifically: The dismantling and disposal of the old insulation, including materials for the new ETICS of 14 cm thickness, could be procured for an average unit price of 515 CZK/m2. The certified doubling of the original ETICS with the Spiral Anksys anchoring cost only 407 CZK/m2. In this specific case, this represented savings of 15%!

The apartment building in Žďár nad Sázavou was insulated with the STX.THERM SANA system with Spiral Anksys anchoring over an area of 730 m2

Example of repair and reinforcement of unstable insulation at Blížkovice School
Another specific example could be Blížkovice School, which decided to insulate the entire building from the original insufficient 50 mm to 150 mm ETICS. One insulated gable wall of approximately 150 m2 additionally did not demonstrate sufficient stability. For economic reasons, the original ETICS was anchored using the Spiral Anksys system and doubled using STX.THERM SANA. Most of the surface (4000 m2) was insulated with the additional insulation system without the need for anchoring.

Blížkovice School utilized the insulation over insulation system on the gable wall.

Example of additional anchoring as a remedy for application errors when applying new insulation in Hradec Králové
In some cases, additional anchoring can also address technological errors made during the application of the new insulation system. During the construction of a new apartment building in Hradec Králové, the contractor made an error and did not follow the technological procedures on 150 m2 — the substrate penetration was not prepared. However, the investor had quality technical supervision that pointed out the error, and it was possible to demand correction in time. The improperly applied insulation system was additionally anchored using the Spiral Anksys system before the completion of the building. The increased costs for anchoring the new system (approximately 150 CZK/m2) were borne by the contractor. For the contractor, this was effectively just a minimal additional cost. When anchoring the system, there is no need for additional substrate penetration. The investor is assured that the insulation system is well anchored and will not fall off.

Additional anchoring can also correct technological errors during the application of the new system.

STOMIX offers designers these services when designing additional insulation:
- training + issuing a license for qualification for designing additional insulation
- will ensure all necessary static calculations
- will carry out large-scale probes at its own expense to evaluate the condition of the substrate, adhesion, and anchoring of the existing ETICS
- if necessary, will perform thermal imaging measurements of the condition of the building (only in winter)

GUIDELINES FOR DESIGNING ANCHORING OF ETICS STX.THERM SANA

•    Attach mechanically to the substrate with anchors and additional adhesive.
•    The method of attaching ETICS depends on the type of substrate, type of ETICS, and conditions arising from ČSN EN 1991 and ČSN 73 2902.
•    For adhering ETICS to the substrate, use adhesives ALFAFIX S2, ALFAFIX S1, ALFAFIX S101, or ALFAFIX S11.
•    The adhesion of the adhesive to the substrate must be at least 80 kPa, which is checked on-site using a pull-off test according to ČSN EN 1542.
•    The adhesion of the adhesive to the substrate can be increased by applying a suitable primer coating.
•    EPS thermal insulation with added graphite, perimeter, and base slabs cannot be adhered to the substrate with ALFAFIX S2 adhesive.
•    XPS slabs cannot be adhered to the substrate with ALFAFIX S2, ALFAFIX S101, and ALFAFIX S1 adhesives.
•    The properties of the insulation are specified in the table.
•    Suitable anchors are Spiral Anksys SA15+ with filling compounds SAF1 or SAF3.
•    The minimum thickness of the foam polystyrene thermal insulation is 80 mm.
•    The maximum allowable unevenness of the substrate is 20 mm/m.
•    At least 30% of the surface of the insulation board must be bonded with adhesive to the substrate.
•    The type, number, and distribution of dowels are determined based on the conditions and results of tests related to the stability of the system on the substrate conducted according to TO-13/0077 in the area of ETICS stability under wind suction and the results of fastening tests according to STO (020-028400).
•    Fastening elements are designed for wind load and in combination with shear load. The number of dowels per m2 is determined by static calculation.
•    Values for the design of mechanical anchoring of ETICS with dowels are provided in the table .

Did you know that…

• Certification bodies in the Czech Republic have verified the suitability of use and recommend the STX.THERM SANA system as a suitable technology for the rehabilitation and doubling of unstable ETICS?
• The resistance to dynamic wind load of the STX.THERM SANA system is up to 3× higher than required by Czech standards under the most unfavorable calculation conditions?
• The universal anchors are designed and resistant to shear load? One anchoring point can transfer a load of up to 50 kg.
• The system can also be used on uneven substrates (with irregularity max. 20 mm/1 m)?
• The STX.THERM SANA system can be applied to insulation from other manufacturers?
• The principle of the technology lies in the easy application, during which the Spiral Anksys anchor is foamed with the Spiral Anksys expansion filling material? This procedure combines anchoring and adhesive of the insulation into a single operation, all without the creation of thermal bridges or condensation zones. As a result, the area of standard adhesive bonding of the insulation is reduced to 20%.
• This system can rehabilitate any contact insulation systems with EPS insulation regardless of the anchoring method of the systems.

Advantages of "doubling" insulation with the STX.THERM SANA system:

• Elimination of current thermal bridges.
• Limitation of point heat transfer.
• Meeting current requirements for energy audits /evaluation of the building/.
• Depending on the depth of anchor installation, heat transfer values of 0.002–0.0005 W/K can be achieved.
• Verified resistance to dynamic wind suction loads according to ETAG 004 and 014 (uplift test).
• The universal anchoring system has been tested for shear and combined loads according to ETAG 020.
• Possibility of rehabilitating unstable insulation systems even on surfaces with less cohesive material without extensive repairs to the substrate.
• Stabilization of released insulation systems without the need for their dismantling.
• In the case of hollow and porous substrates (hollow bricks, foam concrete, Heraklit...), the universal Spiral Anksys anchors exhibit higher parameters than mechanical anchoring.
• Simple application and execution.

The revolutionary solution for repairing inefficient insulation systems is brought by STX.THERM SANA - STOMIX company
