The company VELUX Czech Republic announces another annual round of the Active House Award competition, focused on design proposals for sustainable buildings in active standards. A financial reward is prepared for the winner.

This year’s round of the Active House Award is announced at an international level. The competition is held in four countries: Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, and Slovakia. In the first round of the competition, ten of the best projects will be selected from each country to advance to the second round, where they will compete against each other.

The purpose of the competition is to bring new concepts that would support the sustainable development of villages in suburban areas and to show new possibilities for the use of existing settlement structures as an alternative to newly created settlement units. The intention is also to demonstrate new possibilities for the use of existing structures in housing as well as the potential for their further utilization through examples of the reconstruction of a family house in Wolkersdorf, Austria. The reconstruction design will be based on the active house standard. Therefore, it will be characterized by a quality indoor environment, environmental friendliness, and energy efficiency. Both individuals and groups can submit their projects. An international jury will distribute a total of 5,600 euros among the advancing and winning projects.

Active standard
The aim of the competition is to support student work on sustainable building projects and to allow for a more detailed introduction to the issues of designing buildings in active standards. The active standard is defined by the quality of the indoor environment, consideration for the environment, and the energy efficiency of the building. The main value of the building is represented by the way in which the mutual integration of these aspects supports architectural quality, human health, and a pleasant living environment.

The competition launch - “COMPETITION KICK OFF” - will take place on March 7, 2016, in the Great Hall of the Wolkersdorf Castle in Austria. A seminar with a full-day program will introduce students to the competition, while also offering lectures related to the topic and providing the opportunity to visit the project location.

In the competition, we see a tremendous opportunity to start a discussion about the quality of the built environment, both on a broader, urban scale and on the possibility of focusing on individual buildings and the quality of the indoor environment and healthy living within them,” says Klára Bukolská from VELUX.

Registration for the competition is accessible here. More information about the competition, including detailed conditions, can be found on the competition website.
