The ECOLA (European Conference of Leading Architects) awards have been announced this year for the ninth time. The international ECOLA conference and ECOLA Award are organized since 2000 by Sto AG in collaboration with the Federal Association for Construction and Facades. The ECOLA Award is given for the most significant new buildings or reconstructions in Europe, realized in recent years, "which are as a whole or in part characterized by the use of plaster on the facade or interiors." The awards are announced in two main categories – "New Buildings" and "Modernization / Renovation / Reconstruction".

The prerequisite for inclusion in the selection was the application of plaster as a building material, which influences the architecture of the building. 30 projects were included in the "Modernization / Renovation / Reconstruction" category, while 81 belonged to the "New Buildings" category. The international jury consisted of Manuelle Gautrand (Manuelle Gautrand Architecture, Paris, France) as chair of the jury, Prof. Valentin Bearth (Bearth & Deplazes Architekten, Chur, Switzerland), and Andreas Cukrowicz (cukrowicz nachbaur architekten, Bregenz, Austria). The jury members met on May 17, 2019, at the Sto SE & Co. KGaA headquarters in Stühlingen in the Black Forest. After evaluating all 111 projects from 27 European countries, which were included in the selection after careful evaluation by 19 nominating jurors from 18 countries, the jury awarded four first prizes.

The awards ceremony will take place as part of the ECOLA conference from September 26 to 28, 2019, in Tallinn, Estonia. All contest winners and competing and nominating jurors will participate in the congress. The conference allows for an intensive analysis of plaster as a building material through lectures and workshops, focusing on its practical use and technical and creative development.
