In May of this year, a new building of the Employment Office was put into operation in Brno, on Polní Street. The Employment Office building is part of a block that also includes a new Justice Complex (Municipal and District Court and the State Prosecutor's Office). The building houses 260 officials, the office's archive is located here, which at the time of the move contained 4.6 km of files, and unemployed citizens, of which there are currently almost 20,000 in Brno, also visit the office. The total construction costs of the building amounted to 180 million crowns, nearly two-thirds of which were covered by European grants. It took 9 years from the first study to the completion of the building.
The author of the design is architect Jana Háyeková from the Brno studio Arch.Design s.r.o. The simple mass of the building in the first and second above-ground floors retreats from the basic construction line. This creates a sufficiently large entrance space. This recessed part is emphasized by a glazed section of the facade, which directly connects to the space of the internal atrium, the main communication area for the public. The main motif of the architectural concept of the building is the alternation of solid mass areas of the facade and a regular, only occasionally disrupted, grid of glazed window surfaces.
What was most important to us:
• To create a simple yet interesting external expression of the building using several repeating elements • A layout scheme similar for all floors, allowing easy orientation for clients and employees • A generous two-story entrance hall space with atypical large-area lighting

The building has 5 above-ground and 1 underground floors. The dimensions of the building are 50x37 m, height 22.6 m. In the underground floor, there are machine rooms, garages for employees and clients of the office, an archive, and technical facilities for the operation of the building. There are another 60 parking spaces in front of the building. The above-ground floors contain spaces for employees and clients of the labor office. Internal connections within the building are through staircases and 5 elevators, and the building is barrier-free. The load-bearing structure is a reinforced concrete skeleton, while the internal non-load-bearing structures are made of masonry.
Ventilated Facade Ventilated facades are double-skin building constructions, consisting of a load-bearing wall (often equipped with thermal insulation) and a prefabricated decorative facade board. An air gap is created between them for ventilation. Air flows upwards through this gap along the entire height of the facade.
Unlike thermal insulation finished with plaster, a ventilated facade has several advantages. The ventilated gap naturally allows air to rise. In the summer months, this natural movement reduces overheating of the interior. Conversely, in the cooler part of the year, this air movement reduces moisture condensation from the interior in the layers of insulation. Another significant advantage is the reduction of noise coming from the external environment into the house. The combination of soft insulation and solid material of the facade boards, along with the air gap, is acoustically the most suitable solution.
When designing a ventilated facade, it is crucial that the vertical ventilated gap has a minimum thickness of 25 mm and is continuous, uninterrupted. This ensures the proper function of the chimney effect. At the bottom of the facade, the air is drawn in, and at the upper edge, the air leaves again. The airflow must also be ensured under window sills, lintels, at the attic, and at the base, as seen in the details used by the Arch. Design studio on the building of the Labor Office.
Labor Office building in Brno - basic information: Timeline: from study 2005 to completion 2014 Project author – Arch.Design s.r.o., architect: akad. arch. Jana Háyeková, chief project engineer: ing. Roman Vrba The project also included interior design Cembrit Cembonit facade boards Cembrit Cembonit is a solid facade board with an authentic natural appearance, highlighted by light variations in hue on the surface of the board, creating various light reflections on the facade and getting closer to a purely natural material. Throughout its life, these subtle nuances develop as the surface ages naturally. The manufacturing process ensures a unique surface finish that makes them resistant to external moisture and dirt. The composition of the board guarantees a long-lasting and durable facade. Cembonit facade boards are available in 11 subtle color shades. They are intended for the final layer of ventilated facades, cladding of cornices, columns, ceilings, etc. Their use is not limited to exteriors; excellent mechanical properties are also applicable in interiors.
