Open Day at Mojka Quarry
As part of the international scientific and educational competition Quarry Life Award, organized in the Czech Republic by Českomoravský cement and Českomoravský štěrk, the second Open Day took place at Mojka Quarry on February 13, 2012.

Despite the frosty weather, a large group of interested students and researchers gathered at the quarry. The excursion began with important organizational instructions for the Quarry Life Award competition. Then, participants learned interesting information about the history of the quarry up to the present day.

The tour of the quarry itself started in its eastern part – Břidla, which is a suitable place for remediation and reclamation work. The excursion then continued around the retention basin through the mined areas towards the viewpoint of the quarry – Střed. From this area, the group headed through a botanically significant locality – Mezi Lomy, along the spine road back to the administrative buildings of the quarry. Throughout the entire route, there was a lively discussion on the topic of biodiversity.

The aim of this event was to familiarize potential competitors of the Quarry Life Award with the areas of Mojka Quarry and thus facilitate their selection of an appropriate topic for their competition project.

The Quarry Life Award competition in the Czech Republic is announced by Českomoravský cement a.s. (the successor company) and Českomoravský štěrk a.s. Students and researchers can participate. The aim of this competition is to support ecology and biodiversity in the mining industry.
