This year we introduced a new generation of VELUX roof windows. It brings a number of technological changes and innovations, which allow these roof windows to boast the best energy efficiency with exceptional insulating properties and thermal solar gains.

We have innovated the design of the frame and sash and utilized high-performance insulation material to improve heat transfer and air tightness. The increased glazed area has brought more natural light and solar heat. The new generation of VELUX roof windows thus achieves the best energy balance on the market of roof windows. And what does energy balance mean in practice? VELUX roof windows are more energy-efficient than the building's roof structure itself.” explains Ing. Tomáš Švec, product manager of VELUX Česká republika, s.r.o.

Higher solar gains

The large glazed area of the window allows for better utilization of passive solar gains (g-value), thus saving energy.

The larger glazed area was achieved by narrowing down the window frame and sash. As a result, the U-value of the frame improved and the entire window provides more daylight and better views. The window also guarantees the best energy balance = deliberately designed combinations of U and g parameters. The energy balance of the roof window improves by approximately 3 kWh/m2 for every 1% increase in glazed area.

Lower heat losses
Thanks to smart innovations, we have achieved improvements in insulation properties (U-value).

In order for the new VELUX window to help reduce heat losses, our designers implemented several new improvements. One of them was changing the geometry and placing the sash deeper into the window frame. The recessed installation, in addition to its aesthetic function, helps to improve the thermal parameters of the window. The added sealing further improves the air permeability of the window (class 4) - reducing the amount of air passing through the roof window. In addition to these improvements, a complex of measures was developed to enhance the thermal insulating properties of roof windows - VELUX ThermoTechnologyTM.

VELUX ThermoTechnologyTM

The wooden roof windows incorporate expanded polystyrene (EPS) in their structure, which provides excellent insulation due to its lightweight structure. Together with the new sealing between the window and the frame, the airtightness of the window is improved.

EPS – Expanded Polystyrene

-    is composed mainly of air, which has good thermal properties (λ = 0.038 W/mK)
