Natural materials are an increasingly popular trend across all market segments. Architecture and construction emphasize sustainability, ecology, and the use of these materials even in façade systems. Modern façades today can combine elegance with a rough character. Thanks to modern and natural materials, they can create a more rugged, specific, and unique style of the building. One of the possibilities to achieve such an original appearance and style is the use of weather-resistant steel, also known commercially as Corten, or the locally used Atmofix in the Czech Republic.
Corten material is a patina-forming steel that, due to corrosive stimulants (rain, humidity), creates a passive layer of corrosion products, commonly known as rust, on its surface. Corten sheets develop an impressive and unmistakable rusty patina due to weather conditions just one month after application. |
At DEKMETAL, we create original façades from this material that cannot be overlooked. With proper design, it is a versatile material that we have used on various types of buildings such as transport terminals, office buildings, restaurants, sports halls, museums, and even family houses.
To obtain a protective layer, known as rusty patina, it is necessary for the material to be correctly exposed to weather conditions. Gradually, a solid and adherent layer forms, whose structure, color, and protective properties depend not only on climatic factors but also on the structural arrangement. The patina layer develops gradually and can achieve stable properties only after three years. With this gradual change, one must also account for aesthetic reasons. Before corrosion, the material has a classic dark-silver color like regular steel, and over time it develops a rusty brown-red color.
The material on different parts of the structure may exhibit varying colors and patination times. Windward sides will mature longer than leeward ones; parts of the façade under canopies may take years to develop patina due to limited access to triggering stimulants.
At DEKMETAL, we believe in the originality of each structure. Therefore, our façade systems offer special options that elevate the construction to a higher level. Atypical shapes of visible elements, perforations, or even incorporating lighting directly into the façade are available even for weather-resistant steel (Corten).
If you are skeptical about this material despite its advantages, you can replace it with a multilayered coating imitation on a galvanized supporting sheet. The material may not be as unique, but it provides consistency and does not require waiting for rusting. At the same time, some properties of weather-resistant steel, such as contaminated water carrying washed-down rust particles, are eliminated by the imitation.
DEKMETAL façades offer not only a functional unit due to the ventilated system, tested materials, and our own supporting grid but also a fresh and unique design thanks to unique visible elements. All this, of course, is tailored to each project, with complete technical documentation and professional technical support.
