Traditional bricks and aerated concrete are increasingly being challenged by drywall, both in new construction and renovations. Its consumption has increased sixfold since the late 1990s, and the range of products has also expanded. Thanks to drywall, we can now surpass the properties of masonry, but with the advantages of lower weight and faster construction. The growing popularity of so-called dry construction using plasterboard is reflected in the increasing number of projects that entered this year's Rigips Trophy competition. Among the most successful projects recognized on June 2, 2022, at the Cabaret des Péchés club in Brno were the residential building Na Topolce, the waiting room of the Central Bus Station Zvonařka in Brno, and the auditorium of the Academic Center of Tomas Bata University in Zlín.

Rigips Trophy recognizes the quality of craftsmanship in drywall projects, which represents a sustainable, innovative, and lightweight construction material of today. Various projects, from family houses and hotels to shopping centers and cultural or sports facilities, could enter this traditional competition. This year, the competition introduced a total of six main categories based on the type of building – the area of popular wooden constructions was added.

"This year, a total of 43 projects entered. The expert jury evaluated their originality but also considered the technological and technical level, that is, how well the craftspersons handled the assembly of dry construction systems using plasterboard. Additionally, we always give an audience award, which is decided by the public directly at the festive awards gala evening," explains Radek Šafář, the commercial director of Rigips.

This year's jury was dazzled by the residential building Na Topolce in Prague, built according to the design of the ArchiCon entrepreneurs' association. The wide use of the competition organizer's materials and the contrast between the raw surface of concrete and the smooth construction of drywall led the project to win first place in the "Family and Residential Buildings" category and overall victory across all projects. The execution of the project was entrusted to the contractor INTESTA CZ, s.r.o.

The second place was taken by the Brno project of the Central Bus Station Zvonařka, realized by QuickBulding, s.r.o., where the jury appreciated the design use of plasterboard ceilings. The Prague and Brno projects received the main award for the highest number of votes and also advanced to the international round of the competition, which will take place on April 28, 2023, in Athens, Greece. Third place goes to the contractor Z & Ř STAVBY s.r.o., responsible for the renovation of the auditorium of the Academic Center of Tomas Bata University in Zlín, according to the design of architect Eva Jiřičná. The overall winner received a financial grant of 50,000 CZK, while second and third places received 30,000 and 20,000 CZK, respectively.

The auditorium of the academic center of Zlín University also became the winner of the audience category, which the audience decided via voting tickets. With 1,019 votes, it also won in online voting. For winning in professional categories, the contracting company received pallets of high-strength plasterboard Habito H®.

Overview of winning projects in individual professional categories:

  • Family and residential buildings – Residential building Na Topolce in Prague, contractor INTESTA CZ, s.r.o.

  • Wooden constructions – Houses under Pálava in Klentnice, contractor AESPB Konsult s.r.o.

The awards ceremony was hosted by moderator and actor Tomáš Matonoha, who gradually introduced all the entered projects in the individual categories and revealed which of them had made it to the final nominations. In each category, the jury nominated three projects, and the audience in the hall had the opportunity to watch accompanying videos of all the nominated projects throughout the evening.

This time, the entertainment was provided by a cabaret club ensemble featuring cancan dancers, a tap dancer, a singing duo, and a light show. To conclude, stand-up comedian Adéla Elbel entertained the guests.
