Meeting on May 1st at 14:00 in the center of Ostrava on the Miloš Sýkora Bridge or underneath it (note, difficult to traverse!!). Guides: Martin Strakoš and Radovan Lipus.
Meeting on the bridge and under the bridge (note, difficult to traverse!!) of Miloš Sýkora by the Ostravice River. At the beginning, we will dunk the book Guide to the Architecture of Ostrava in the Ostravice River and then we will take a path through the city from the bridge into the streets and to the square, among churches, city and department stores, theaters, and galleries... thus around the multifunctional building by Brno architects Ladislav Kuba and Tomáš Pilař and the oldest monument of the city - St. Wenceslas Church - we will head to Masaryk Square. We will continue past the old Arena, that is the building by Vienna architect Wunibald Deininger and the café and bookstore Academia by local Hans Ulrich. We will pass to Kuří Square with buildings by Felix Neumann and Ferdinand Mainx and Leopold Popp and further to the National House, now the Jiří Myron Theater, reconstructed after a fire by architect Ivo Klimeš, and to the co-cathedral by Olomouc architect Gustav Meretta. Then we will head down Zámecká Street with the department store Bachner by German architect Erich Mendelsohn to the former city savings bank by Karel Kotas and Nádražní Street to the House of Art by Prague architects František Fiala and Vladimír Wallenfels. We will look at the passage houses of the local Arnošt Korner, the former Palace Hotel, the department store Textilia by Berlin architect Marie Frommer, and Smetanovo Square with the theater by Vienna's Alexander Graf and the department store Brouk and Babka, now the Librex bookstore, by K. Kotas. We will conclude our journey at the nearby puppet theater by Prague architects Petr Hájek and Gabriela Minářová. There we will discuss architecture, the history of the city, theater, and human fates. Organized by the Fiducia antiquarian bookstore and club in cooperation with the National Heritage Institute, territorial expert workplace in Ostrava.
