The next lecture in the series Reflections on Architecture will take place on Monday November 19, 2018 at the Faculty of Architecture, STU in Bratislava, room 119, at 4:00 PM.
Marie-Therese Harnoncourt (*1967) studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. After school, she interned at Steven Holl's office. In 1994, she co-founded The Poor Boys Enterprise with Ernst J. Fuchs, which is currently continued by their present studio, The Next Enterprise. They describe their work as provocative and unpredictable. In 2017, they received the Hans Hollein Art Award for their extensive and internationally recognized work. Among their most notable projects are the Cloud No.7 pavilion in Grafenegg, a swimming pool on the shore of Lake Caldaro, and the Wolkenturm tower in Grafenegg.
The lecture in English will take place thanks to the support of the Bratislava Self-Governing Region and the Austrian Cultural Forum.
The Reflections on Architecture project focuses on contemporary architecture with an emphasis on the current architectural discussion. The realization of the third year of the project was financially supported by the Bratislava Self-Governing Region and the Austrian Cultural Forum. The project was initiated in the spring of 2016 at the Faculty of Architecture, STU, as part of the preparation for the course Current Trends in Architecture, aimed at final-year students. From the very beginning, the project aimed not only to expand the syllabus of the course but primarily to create an open communication platform between the academic environment, protagonists of contemporary architecture, and the public, thereby raising awareness of architecture also among the broader public. We proceeded from the assumption that most participants in architectural discussions are aware of the current manifestations of architecture, recognize their formal characteristics and main protagonists, but do not know the genesis of these manifestations, their contexts, and the reasons for their emergence. Therefore, the ambition of the project is to place the current architectural discussion in a broader cultural, economic, historical, and geographical context while also pointing out the internal architectural connections as well as the immediate link between architecture and society. The project brings current trends, significant personalities, schools, and groups closer to the audience. It focuses on uncovering the phenomena and processes that stand behind the emergence of contemporary architecture, or directly influence it.
The third series of lectures, taking place in the fall of 2018, will focus on the Austrian architectural scene, which is particularly inspiring for the Slovak one. Within the series, architects representing virtually all generations actively creating in Austria will present. However, the dramaturgy of the project has not only pursued generational aspects but also aimed for a balanced representation of the most interesting tendencies that characterize contemporary Austrian architecture.
