Gottfried Semper

On Monday, April 13, 2015, at 5:00 PM, there will be a lecture by Prof. Jiří Kroupa at the Methodical Center for Modern Architecture in Brno, located in Villa Stiassni (access from Preslovy street, trolleybus no. 38 - stop Marie Pujmanové) on the topic of Semper's historicist functionalism and contemporary architecture.

Although Gottfried Semper's work is considered a model example of 19th-century historicism in architecture, his architectural theory is remarkably relevant in significant currents of contemporary architecture. It is enough to recall Semper's emphasis on subjective experience with architecture, his anti-Hegelian and anti-Darwinian stance, his focus on the concept of "architectural space," and finally, his rejection of normative definitions of the concept of style. The lecture will present not only his theory but also some examples of contemporary architecture in connection with Semper's creative thinking.

The series of lectures in the newly opened modern center introduces various traditions of research in modern architecture. Gradually, speakers from both academia and practice will present fundamental approaches from the past and present to modern architecture in Brno. Before the lecture, visitors can explore the park and the exteriors of the villa; the area will be open from 4 PM.

Free for members of the Friends of MG Society / others 60 CZK.
