Bruntál - The main cause of the roof collapse of the Bruntál cinema Centrum was its poor technical condition. The hidden load-bearing parts of the roof were rotten and therefore could not hold the water that accumulated after heavy rains, said Jiří Ondrášek, spokesman for the Bruntál town hall, today. Part of the cinema's roof collapsed on Thursday, September 13, shortly after noon. Only thanks to a series of lucky coincidences was no one injured. A children's film screening was scheduled to start in the afternoon.
The removal of the consequences is now being coordinated by an expert group appointed by the mayor. "The clearing of the aftermath of the accident began on Saturday and is still ongoing. The retrieval of some parts will likely require heavy machinery," clarified Ondrášek. The damage is estimated to be in the millions of crowns according to preliminary estimates.
The city has temporarily halted screenings in the adjacent small hall, which was not directly affected by the accident. The future of the building will be determined by a structural assessment and mycological survey.
The accident prompted the town hall to check the condition of other roofs. The working group is to identify municipal buildings with flat roofs and warn their managers of the need for inspection or securing a structural assessment to prevent a similar incident from occurring again.
