Brno - The South Moravian Regional Office approved the project for the construction of a new entrance complex for the Brno Zoo after a year of discussion in recent days. The director of the zoo, Martin Hovorka, hopes that the zoo will obtain a building permit this year. The complex will cost nearly 200 million crowns. The project includes the construction of a parking lot for 300 cars and the establishment of a new building. Hovorka said this today to ČTK.
"Obtaining consent was difficult. There were many comments on the proposal that we had to address,” the director stated. The zoo adjusted the proposal based on the wishes of the citizens living in its vicinity. Now, it must obtain a zoning decision for the project.
Hovorka did not dare to estimate when construction might begin. However, it will be the most expensive project for the zoo so far. The new parking lot for 300 cars and eight buses will replace the current one, which has only 18 spaces for passenger cars. The zoo is visited annually by a quarter of a million tourists. They are forced to park in the surrounding streets or at the parking lot of a nearby DIY store.
Hovorka emphasized that the new entrance complex will allow for the development of the zoo and increase its attendance to between 400,000 and 500,000 people per year. Many tour groups currently skip the zoo during their visits to Brno due to a long-term lack of parking spaces.
The complex will also include an administration building, which will eventually house marine aquariums with sharks and rays. The complex will be built in the unused area of Brno University of Technology. A bridge will connect the new area to the zoo, which is located behind a busy road.
The zoo houses 800 animals of 200 species. The biggest attractions are the polar bears, the polar wolf enclosure with an Indian hut, the new Beringia exhibit featuring Kamchatka bears, the Tiger Rocks pavilion, and the Tropical Kingdom with numerous reptiles.
